I’ve been to couples therapy before, and this was… definitely a first. The therapist was friendly, but the structure of the session was almost nonexistent. One partner ended up doing most of the talking, often in long stretches, while the other had very little chance to speak or clarify anything. There was no effort to balance the conversation or keep things grounded. The lack of guidance made the session feel more like a one-sided interview than therapy. At one point, I remember thinking, “Wow… this is a pretty unique way to break up with someone,” because that’s honestly what it felt like — being silently watched while the other person listed everything wrong with the relationship and the therapist nodded along. There was no interruption, no redirecting, no equal time, no emotional stabilization. For couples dealing with trauma, high emotion, or major communication issues, this approach isn’t just unhelpful — it can actually make things worse. Nice enough person, but not equipped for high-intensity couples work. If you’re looking for actual mediation, structure, or fairness, I’d strongly recommend a more experienced therapist.

I attended a couples session with this therapist, and unfortunately the experience was not helpful or balanced. The structure of the session allowed one partner to dominate the conversation for long periods of time, often speaking for me, interpreting my emotions, and narrating my history. At no point did the therapist intervene to create equal time, ask for my perspective, or redirect the discussion when things became overwhelming. As someone with trauma history, I needed a therapist who could slow the pace, stabilize the room, and ensure emotional safety for both people. Instead, the session became one-sided and left me feeling unheard, misrepresented, and more distressed than when I walked in. I don’t question his intentions, but I do not believe he currently has the experience necessary to manage high-intensity couples work, trauma responses, or emotionally charged dynamics. Anyone seeking trauma-informed or well-structured couples therapy may want to look for a more experienced provider. This review isn’t written out of anger — it’s simply an honest reflection of the session and a heads-up for others who need a more balanced, regulated, and neutral approach. I hope he continues developing his skills, but this was not the right fit for us.
