My son has faced significant challenges in school since he was in preschool. Despite requesting assessments and having him tested annually, I was always told he was boarder line of needing services. As the years went by, it became clear he was struggling more, not less. At his 3rd-grade parent-teacher conference—either in Februar 2023—I again asked for a him to be evaluated. When I hadn’t heard anything over the school year during the summer, I decided to take matters into my own hands and contacted the district office for his test results. My call seemed to trigger a sense of urgency, as I soon received multiple calls from staff eager to assist. Finally, the results revealed he was severely dyslexic. I felt a mix of anger and relief—anger that this had gone unnoticed for so long and relief that he would finally get the help he needed. However, as the school years continued, I noticed that although he was being pulled out for support, the help didn’t specifically target his dyslexia; it mainly focused on reading, missing the mark for his unique learning needs. Determined to find a better solution, I sought external help and found Rio Grande Learning Solutions. To my surprise, the program was run by Melanie Overbay, a former classmate of mine. We arranged an appointment, and while I felt a mix of hope and skepticism about the program, I was open to anything that might help. It was a 10-day program. I wasn't sure how much could be accomplished in such a short time. But, I was definitely proven wrong he has learned more in the past 10 days then in the past 6 years in the Los Lunas Public Schools. I’m filled with amazement at my son’s progress. He has gained essential skills for his academic journey, and his overall demeanor has transformed. He’s become more focused and calm, and it’s inspiring to see how this has positively influenced his football performance. Other parents and coaches have noticed too, asking what I’m doing because they can see how much he has improved in just the last 10 days. I am incredibly grateful to Melanie for her belief in him and for providing a transformative path when I had nearly lost hope. Her support has truly changed his life in profound ways. Melanie has superior educational skills and has made learning to read so much more enjoyable for my granddaughter. She warmly engaged with both of my grandchildren and they look forward to their sessions with her! Their confidence is growing.
